Brief History of the ECC

The Engineering Challenge Cup (ECC) was envisioned in 1993 by Eugen Goetter and his crew at the end of the Cap Sunion Rally in Greece. Arno Hemm was volunteered to become the event’s founder and first event organiser. Arno arranged for three boats to spend a week competing with each other to arrive first at each place they visited. It was agreed that the overall winner would organise the next year’s event.
There were no other rules apart from having low stress fun.

We continue here with the growing history of the ECC from the initial start in 1993:

  • The ECC was founded in 1993 by Arno Hemm
  • Started in 1994 the first Regatta was around Mallorca, Spain
  • In 1995 the waters around Kos, Greece were visited
  • Kusadasi-Marmaris, Turkey was the route in 1996
  • The area of Athens, Greece was sailed in 1997
  • Marmaris, Turkey and the seas in this area during 1998
  • The ECC went to Mallorca, Spain again in 1999
  • Elba in Italy was visited in 2000
  • The coast of Istria, Croatia was sailed in 2001
  • Saronioun Gulf south of Athens, Greece was sailed in 2002
  • The 10th anniversary was celebrated in Mallorca, Spain in 2003
  • More than 50 yachts enjoyed the coast of Split / Croatia in 2004
  • In 2005 53 yachts sailed around the coast of Biograd / Croatia
  • In 2006 67 yachts gathered in Lavrion Greece for the 13th ECC
  • In 2007 70 yachts were entered in Gocek, Turkey making this the biggest ECC Fleet to date.
  • In 2008 70 yachts sailed, this time in Bodrum, Turkey.
  • Mallorca, Spain, was again venue for ECC in 2009.
  • Biograd in Croatia hosted the ECC 2010.
  • In 2011 59 yachts sailed from Orhaniye to Marmaris, Turkey.
  • In 2012 53 yachts participated in Biograd, Croatia.
  • In 2013 the 20th anniversary was celebrated in Mallorca, Spain.
  • In 2014 the beautifull Island Sardinia, Italy was host to the ECC Fleet.
  • In 2015 the ECC Fleet raced from Biograd, Croatia.
  • In 2016 the bay of Gocek and Fethiye in Turkey hosted the ECC
  • In 2017 the Dalmatian coast of Croatia will be the scene of the ECC

ECC-Trophy

This is the ECC trophy. You will have the honour of keeping this unique sculpture for one year if your team wins the ECC.

Year after year, the name of the current ECC winner is added to the sculpture. But remember this is not an olympic race: we sail just for fun. The trophy is for the winning boat, but we all are winners.

Good luck and lots of fun to all ECC competitors!

Commodores Cup

Founder: Heinz Baedorff

The Commodores Cup will be challenged only by the ECC-Winners of the past ECC history. Those ECC-Winners get the status of a Commodore. Therefore the Commodores Cup has become a very famous and exciting race during the ECC-Regatta week. With special thanks to Heinz, we did get this unique event, which makes the ECC even more complete and gives it a special touch.
